Colostrum, also known as bovine colostrum, is obtained from cow's milk. Colostrum is a substance secreted by mammals' mammary glands in the last stage of pregnancy up to several dozen hours after delivery. It has a characteristic yellow color. Its composition is different to that of milk obtained at a later date. These differences are especially in the nutritional value and immunoglobulins (also known as antibodies).

The composition of the colostrum changes with time after birth. The amount of proteins decreases in favor of sugar and lipids, which are energy material.
Lactose (milk sugar) is present in colostrum, but its content is much lower than in later milk. However, it is sufficient to provide an energy source for organs and tissues, and to regulate the composition and activity of the intestinal microflora (as a result of the breakdown of lactose into lactic acid).
However, the amount of milk sugar in the colostrum collected within a few hours after delivery is so small that it should not cause digestive problems in people suffering from lactose intolerance.
Also, colostrum should not be used in children under 3 years of age due to potential allergies to milk proteins.
